Venerable Brotherhood of Our Lady of Lapa
Its mission is to promote the cult of Nossa Senhora da Lapa; to disseminate Christian doctrine; to promote and to protect health; to promote education and culture; to practise social solidarity; to protect its brotherhood´s Brothers; and to defend and to preserve material and immaterial cultural heritage.
It is the owner and the administrator of the Lapa Cemetery, which is considered to be the oldest Portuguese romantic cemetery. Camilo Castelo Branco, Brother of the Venerable Brotherhood, is buried there, among several other relevant personalities. After his suicide, his remains were placed in the tomb-chapel of his friend Freitas Fortuna. The Brotherhood has a valuable Camilo collection, with special emphasis on the revolver Camilo used to end his life and the epistolary correspondence exchanged with Freitas Fortuna.
