São João National Theatre

The Real Teatro de São João was destroyed by a violent fire in 1908. The current building was built in the same location and it was inaugurated in 1920, according to a project by the architect Marques da Silva.

It is classified as a National Monument.

Several Camillian works were performed at the Teatro São João, or either started in this theatre (O Sangue, 1868). The novelist was a regular spectator there, where he applauded and praised actors and opera singers; he intervened in the tribute to the poet Bingre; participated in the benefit for singer Laura Geordano; and apologized for the accusations made by João Novais Vieira, by knocking his head in the foyer.
