Porto City Hall | Municipal Public Library

Founded on the 9th of July of 1833, by order of D. Pedro IV, in the midst of liberal struggles, the Municipal Library has been installed in the former Convent of Santo António da Cidade since 1842 (18th century). Among its collections there’s a valuable Camillian collection, made up of manuscripts of original works; correspondence to and from Camilo; printed works by Camilo and about himself; miscellaneous manuscripts; varied iconography; and personal objects of the writer.

Since he was a compulsive reader and passionate bibliophile, Camilo was a frequent user of the Public Library, where he spent time reading old books or consulting old manuscripts. To achieve better professional stability, in 1858 the writer applied for the position of 2nd librarian. Despite having received public support from Alexandre Herculano, he was not selected for the position.
