Throughout his life, Camilo Castelo Branco was very interested in genealogical themes and subjects. The ancestry and descent of names such as João Gonçalves Zarco, the discoverer of Madeira, Inês de Castro, Nuno Álvares Pereira or Leonor Teles were recurring themes in his correspondence and studies. You only have to access his personal archive to see this in the panoply of documents related to these themes. The same goes for his personal library, where there are plenty of copies that prove this interest.
If 150 years ago access to information was difficult, even costly, and could only be done using large cartapaces, available only to an educated minority, today, thanks to the democratisation of knowledge, knowing your ancestry is not just a task for great scholars or people with noble parchments. It's within the reach of anyone with the will, availability and determination to do so.
With this in mind, the Camilo’s House, in S. Miguel de Seide, is once again promoting this genealogy training course, entitled ‘Genealogy in Camilo: Initiation to Genealogical Studies and Ancestry Research’, which is open to the general public and to all those who want to discover (their) ancestors from the writer of ‘A brasileira de Prazins’ and travel through the past using documentary sources.
This will be the 3rd edition of this genealogy training course where, during 4 sessions starting in March, we will discover our grandparents ...in the House of Camilo and with Camilo.
